DESCRIPTION: Mayan Mummies appear to be desiccated corpses dressed in the priest garments of a Mayan worshipper of Tezcatlipoca. The bodies are often still adorned with the jewelry and raiment's the individual had in life. Because of the particular preserving process, the creature is also usually covered in salt.
COMBAT/TACTICS: The followers of Tezcatlipoca were all magic-users and the mummies will have the powers of a 3rd to 18th level magic user. Rarely, there will be a mummy that is more powerful. Without a powerful entity to guide them, Mayan Mummies tend to stay within the vicinity of their tombs attacking anyone that disturbs them and their treasure. They will attack random targets of opportunity unless guided to do otherwise. Once engaged in melee, the mummies become increasingly agitated and 1-3 rounds later they will use their special attack. The front of the mummy's ribcage with morph into a horrible maw of fangs that do 3-12 points of damage. Victims viewing the transformation must make a save vs. fear or flee the immediate vicinity for 1-6 rounds. Mayan mummies cannot be harmed by normal weapons unless they are blessed. Magic weapons that are not blessed do half damage against the mummies. Objects that are specially enchanted to effect undead or have clerical powers do double damage against the mummies. Some of the more powerful mummies will use their spells to cast Animate Dead on any fallen foes. These zombies will greatly resemble Mayan Mummies, but they will not have any of the mummies' powers. Wooden stakes, garlic, sunlight, mirrors or the presentation of holy symbols have no effect on the fiends. It is rumored they are not vampires, but this cannot be proven.
HABITAT/SOCIETY: Without Tezcatlipoca to lead them, Mayan Mummies guard their tombs waiting for him to arrive. Some of the mummies may have specific orders the evil god gave to them. The most powerful of the mummies may lead rituals to summon the god or extend the range of Tezcatlipoca's influence. The mummies attack the followers of Quetzalcoatl without mercy. Should a significant number of followers of Quetzalcoatl come within close proximity of the mummies, their tactics will become more coordinated and ruthless until they or the followers are destroyed. Mayan Mummies are afraid of cows. Should the undead fiends be confronted by a stampede they will flee on foot at top speed. They will, under no circumstances, attack a cow or anyone seated upon a cow. A controlling, more powerful entity may force the mummies to make a morale check, but the check will be at -10. Mayan mummies probably never drink wine, but that's only because they probably don't drink anything, not because they are vampires.
ECOLOGY: Unlike their Egyptian counterparts, Mayan mummies are not wrapped in bandages. Nor are they more flammable than any other undead creature. Due to the more humid climate of the New Realm, the Mayans developed a preservation process that essentially turns the meat of a human body into the equivalent of beef jerky. Using a great deal of salt and magical preservation, the body is preserved, but greatly emaciated. The mummies are usually found in Mayan temples that are more than 1000 years old, but it is possible to find them in individual tombs all over the New Realm. Mayan mummies will probably not be found running creepy castles where travelers are forced to spend the night. They probably don't drink blood. They are probably not vampires but no Mayan Mummy and vampire has ever been seen together.
